How does YMB help the Performing Arts students, teachers and programs at York?
Grants, scholarships and private lessons for students to pursue opportunities in the performing arts
Year-end award programs to honor exemplary students in the performing arts
The hosting of concert receptions
Support for York's one-of-a-kind Fine Arts Week and the York Album Project
Help for students to offset the costs of school-sponsored travel, including by organizing fundraisers such as the traditional Holiday Greens Sale and Lou Malnati's Pizza Sale
During the 2023-2024 school year, for example, YMB organized three fundraisers that deposited thousands of dollars into individual student escrow accounts. It also defrayed costs for students who took part in the band trip to Orlando, including special assistance for those in need.
Partner with District 205 on projects to improve the performing arts experience at York High School.
Most recently, YMB reached its "Dream Grand" goal (with Elmhurst Music Boosters), raising $22,000 to help bring a concert-worthy piano to the York auditorium.
YMB looks forward to carrying on this tradition, but these successes are only possible with your membership, donations and help.
Pop-Up Pantry on November 16: A Chance for Performing Arts Students to Support the York Community
We are looking for York Performing Arts students and their families to participate in an upcoming Pop-Up Pantry hosted by York Music Boosters. This is an amazing opportunity to take part in a community service project, help families in need, and have some fun with fellow York Performing Arts students.
The event will be held from 9:30-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, at Elm Court Apartments, located at 1025 Ferrari Drive in Bensenville. There are three ways for students and the entire York community to contribute to the success of our Pop-Up Pantry, an event where we will bring and deliver food and other necessities to local families in need.
Here are the three ways:
Collect items in advance of the YMB Pop-Up Pantry — Collect items from your family, neighbors, friends or local businesses. Whatever you are able to collect, drop off the items off at 250 N. Indiana Street in Elmhurst by Friday, Nov. 15, or bring them to Elm Court Apartments at the start of the event (9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16). What items should you collect for the Pop-Up Pantry? We have created a list of most desired items. That list can be found on the SignUp Genius page that YMB has created for this event; see link below.
Volunteer at the YMB Pop-Up Pantry — YMB needs 10 to 15 York Performing Arts students to volunteer to make this event run as efficiently as possible. Volunteer students will help organize and hand out items. Wear your York gear at the event! Service hour signatures will be provided to volunteers.
Donate to the YMB Pop-Up Pantry — Don't have time to volunteer or shop? You can send money to YMB Secretary Leslie Van Meir on Venmo: @Leslie-VanMeir. Our YMB team will do the shopping for you. Please include We Pop Up on the memo line..
A Day of Learning, Connecting and Appreciating Dance at Illinois Dance Festival
In early October, members of Concert Dance and York Dance Company attended the Illinois High School Dance Festival at Lyons Township High School. More than 400 dance students from the Chicago area participated in master classes, watched performances by professional dance companies, and had opportunities to audition for post-secondary dance opportunities.
An Enriching Experience: Performing Arts Students Have Special Day at Chicago Symphony Orchestra
On Oct. 9, students in York High School Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Concert Choir, Concert Dance, and AP Music Theory traveled to Chicago for a unique opportunity — the chance to see an open rehearsal of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Students watched a rehearsal on a brand-new piece of music: "Chuphshah! Harriet's Drive to Canaan" by James Lee III. This piece is about Harriet Tubman's work on the Underground Railroad. The second piece was Dmitri Shostakovich's "Symphony No. 5 in D Minor, Op. 47." Students were excited to see the rehearsal process and listen to how the performance evolved. Other highlights included seeing York alum John Hagstrom on stage (Hagstrom is part of the CSO's trump section) and enjoying lunch in Millennium Park.
