Drew Gasparini - Sold Out Concert

On Monday, December 6th York Drama students participated in a concert with renowned Broadway composer Drew Gasparini. The sold-out concert took place at the Elmhurst Art Museum where Gasparini performed songs from his recently released album We Aren’t Kids Anymore and accompanied students in their performances of his music.

Gasparini first visited Elmhurst in 2015 to work with York Drama and appreciated the chance to work with this new group of performers. One of the largest names in contemporary musical theatre, he is currently developing several new stage musicals including the Broadway-bound musical adaptation of The Karate Kid, It’s Kind of a Funny Story and Night Shift. His new autobiographical song cycle, We Aren’t Kids Anymore, is published through Concord Theatricals.

“The opportunity to work with such a force in the musical theatre and Broadway community is a truly remarkable experience for our students,” said Rebecca Marianetti, York Drama Director. “Students will walk away with skills for a lifetime of performing.”

York students selected to rehearse and perform with Gasparini include Annalise Belzile, Aidan Costanzo, Owen Espinosa, Paige Greve, Luke Hanley, David Izzo, Rosie Kungl, Leo Macariola, Ben Plaisted, Rianna Roberts, Grace Stewart, Kristina Vezmar, and Regan Wright. Selected students participated in a public master class with Gasparini the afternoon before the concert and the ensemble of students closed the evening with a powerful rendition of “When I Go.”

“It’s a big deal to be working with someone at the Broadway level, especially as someone who is hoping to study musical theatre,” said Owen Espinosa, York Senior. “It means so much to be learning from and performing with a composer whose music speaks so much to me.”

“I have been singing Gasparini’s songs since middle school, so this is a particularly special ‘full circle’ moment,” York Junior, Regan Wright reflected. “I am so fortunate I go to a high school where opportunities like this are available to me - its mind blowing.”

York Drama students are scheduled to perform their next musical, ACE, February 3, 4, 5 and 6. See yorkdrama.org for details and to join York Drama Boosters.
