Deans' Office

The Deans develop and implement appropriate policies in order to ensure proper student conduct, safety, and health. They monitor all attendance and discipline initiatives and communicate regularly with other members of Student Services to resolve conflicts in order to ensure adequate academic progress. They supervise student activities, participate on school committees, and evaluate teachers as assigned by the Principal.

EXCUSED ABSENCE LIMITATION

York High School limits the number of excused absences to eight (8) days each semester. Any student receiving five excused absences in a semester will be notified in an e-mail or letter sent to the parents or guardian. Subsequently, if the student reaches eight absences in a semester, he or she will be required to attend a meeting with his or her parents/ guardian and the Assistant Principal for Student Services or his designee. The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss the reasons for the absences and the possible withdrawal of the student from class without credit for any further undocumented absences. The school waives this requirement for any student with a documented absence, such as hospitalization or serious illness.

TARDINESS

A student is tardy if he/she is not seated at his/her desk ready to work when the bell rings. The student will receive no credit for work missed while absent from class. The time spent in the Dean’s office processing the truancy referral will be marked as excused. After 10 minutes, an unexcused tardy changes to an unexcused absence. The amount of time before a student can be marked absent from class is 10 minutes.

YORK TARDY POLICY

1. The teacher gives the student a warning.

2. The teacher gives the student a second warning.

3. The student is referred to the Dean’s Office. The parents are notified and the student is placed on Tardy Probation.

4. The student is referred to the dean’s office. The student is assigned 3 lunch detentions.

5. The student is referred to the office. The student is assigned two days of After School Detention.

6. The student is withdrawn from the class with a WF.
